Patrick, this is a superb piece! You seemed to channel some Wendell Berry which made me wonder whether you have come acorss Hadden Turner's substack Over the Field? He writes in a very similar vein. Where is that photo taken that you used at the start of the post? (it looks very much like Switzerland....)

It would be "easy" to think that either the so-called free market or the government would solve these sorts of problems. And as a culture, if you can call it that, we like easy. "Externalized costs," I think the economists call them, technically (like flushing the topsoil of the heartland into the Gulf of America and creating algae blooms killing the sea life) have been here for a long time, so there is little hope the free market or government will now step in. Virtue though...that's where it's at...or was, now where did I put that down? Hmmm. Maybe some are scrambling around trying to find it, but more need to join the search. Great post Patrick.
