What a fabulous example - both physically/visually and socially/emotionally. A great one-two punch, I guess!
Do you include girls in these activities? I ask because I am aware that boys thrive on and crave physical activity in their learning processes, but some girls might enjoy these challenges???
Girls and boys both have bodies and can therefore both pursue physical excellence. What constitutes physical excellence differs in some ways and our training strives to take that into account. You'll see that about half the campers in the group photo are girls. We train them separately in order to maximize the experience for both.
"In the end, no discussion of character in the Aeneid will matter or be remembered by these students without the illuminating influence of teachers like those who labored alongside them in the dirt."
This is a challenge I've been thinking about, we know that laboring in the dirt with your people is how the leader builds rapport but how can we, as leaders, commit to this at scale? At some point there is only so much of the leader to go around and they have to bring in others to facilitate their power structure and it's important that these other leaders are also on board with the concept of "being in the shit" with your people, otherwise this entire structure breaks down.
Whether in local politics, at the company or wherever else, this "Lateral Leadership" (leading alongside them in the trenches) is how we can continue to take the steps to emerge out of these challenging times we live in. Great post and illustration of Lateral Leadership!
Totally agree about cultivating this among subordinate leaders. If you're leading this way with them and they don't / won't do the same, it's untenable.

Good to know! I didn't see any girls, but was mostly just curious.
