Any infraction is rewarded with physical pain and degradation, and sometimes an added psychological element if you do something stupid: you might have to write letters to your fellow recruits’ mothers, wives, and children to explain why your selfishness, incompetence, weakness, or stupidity has caused their son, husband, or father to die unnecessarily.
